Case study: HP Storage Works EVA (Enterprise Virtual Array) 6000
Due to a natural disaster, the storage system was flooded and could not be accessed anymore.
Business critical was SQL database files as well as employee information.
In this case 80 hard disks contained 18 virtual RAID volumes configured with both VRAID 1 and VRAID 5 arrays.
To find out exactly how the EVA system was designed, we had to acquire identical hardware. We set them up in various configurations to find out how custom EVA file system structures are built as these define how the data is distributed within the drives.
After almost six weeks of extensive development, reengineering and recovery work, the project was successfully completed. By using the newly created tools, we were able to recover four terabytes of sensitive SQL database files (almost 90 per cent of the data lost due to the flood).
Tips to avoid data loss situations
- Power off – it’s important to power down in a controlled way to ensure that backup and maintenance routines starts on a corrupted system.
- Never replace a defect disk with a disk that has been used in another system. Always erase a second hand disk before use.
- If you hear suspicious sounds, power off immediately. Such a system will crash completely after a while.
- Always backup before you change system settings, or switch hardware or software.
- Mark all hard disks positions in the system before anyone are removed from the system.
- If you experience a system crash in a rebuild mode, do not run more rebuild sessions.
- Don’t run tools like CHKDSK or fsck and neither defragment potentially defective disks. Please note that you can be asked!

- Remember that repair tools are designed to make your system stable. Such tools can work on single defective hard disks but on RAID you can create unrecoverable changes.
