The GDPR and the Right to be Forgotten

The advent of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), and in particular, Article 17, about the Right to be Forgotten, obliges all companies that manage personal data of residents in the EU to delete such information upon request or in case the detention is no longer necessary in relation to the purposes for which they were previously collected or processed. Any violation can be sanctioned with fines of up to € 20 million or 4% of the global annual turnover.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

It means that if you have always thought that cancelling files means clicking on "Delete" and then on "Empty Bin", from today you will have to radically change your approach. Even formatting a disk is not enough to guarantee compliance with the new European GDPR: if a file is no longer visible inside your PC, this does not necessarily mean that it is no longer present on the device.

How Can you Meet the GDPR Requirements?

In order not to risk expensive fines, you need to rely on companies that can provide effective, reliable and complete products (either software or hardware) for the permanent data erasure from all IT assets: removing all traces of information from the targeted media and receiving a proof of the successful process is the only way to meet the requirements of the GDPR.

Software Erasure

Erasure Verification Services

Data privacy and retention regulations force organizations to both retain and dispose of certain data and prove that proper procedures are in place to maintain compliance. A verified erasure process using data erasure software or erasure hardware will help your organization better meet these regulations.
