Ontrack extends patented Remote Data Recovery™ service from laptops and desktops to high-end storage systems

Saving “lost” data and decreasing costly downtime by working around the clock via remote technology

MINNEAPOLIS, September 17, 2002 – Kroll Ontrack Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroll Inc. (Nasdaq: KROL) which provides data recovery and electronic evidence software and services, today announced new developments in their Remote Data Recovery™ services. With Ontrack’s patented Remote Data Recovery technology, lab-quality data recovery is performed through a customer’s modem or Internet connection, eliminating the need to remove and ship the hard drive or dismantle the computer system.

“This Remote Data Recovery capability is very valuable for users of large networked storage systems, like Storage Area Networks (SANs) and RAID arrays, as well as other enterprise file systems that store data in large databases, such as MicrosoftÒ Exchange and SQL,” said Greg Olson, vice president of operations for Ontrack Data Recovery.

Ontrack’s engineers are experts at recovering lost data due to catastrophic server hardware failures, while suggesting ways for customers to prevent similar situations in the future.

“Our engineers will put forth the same effort whether solving an emergency data loss situation with a large global business or helping an embarrassed husband recover data he accidentally erased from his wife’s laptop,” said Bob Hackett, manager for Ontrack Remote Data Recovery. Hackett points to a recent example that illustrates the company’s commitment to solving customer’s problems. “Recently, we completed a project on two large SAN systems, which spanned the globe (one in New York, the other in Japan) and were three terabytes each. The Ontrack Remote Data Recovery engineers worked around the clock to solve the problem sharing work between their labs in Japan, Germany, the UK and the US.”

Having just increased the speed of its MS Exchange recovery process by 400 times, Ontrack continues to make advancements in recovery of data lost due to MS Exchange or MS SQL database corruption, software failure, and accidental deletion of files or objects. The company also recently performed a 145 gigabyte SQL database split over five files on four separate volumes of a SAN.

Ontrack’s data recovery services can restore and repair database files into new readable files that are quickly accessible, saving businesses what could be staggering financial, legal and operational ramifications.

The city of Venice, Florida, an Ontrack Data Recovery customer, recently called upon the company for a fast remote solution: “One of our consultants recommended Ontrack’s data recovery service to us, calling the company the ‘best and most reliable data recovery company in the country,’ and thankfully they were right,” said Lance Heiss, assistant director of IT systems for the City of Venice, FL. “We had not been able to properly back up our fire department’s Run Reports by replicating them in our SQL 7 database, and it would have taken years to re-input all of the information in the reports. We got Ontrack’s engineers on the phone, they effectively explained to us how to connect to their remote system, and the next thing we knew, all of our data was recovered.”
