Ontrack demonstrates world’s first remote virus cleaning capability

Ontrack (Nasdaq: ONDI) today announced that it has developed Remote Virus Cleaning, a unique method that cleans computer viruses over a modem line, providing a quick, easy and convenient way to save users the high cost of extended downtime often associated with virus infection. Remote Virus Cleaning is an extension of the company’s Remote Data Recovery Service introduced earlier this year.

When computer systems become infected with viruses, users are often unaware; they only know that they are unable to access their data and sometimes unable to even start their computers. Just recently, a state government agency came to Ontrack with an unbootable Windows system. Through a modem connection, an Ontrack engineer determined that the hard drive was infected with the Monkey B virus and was able to remove the virus remotely.

"Since we began offering Remote Data Recovery services earlier this year, we have observed that more than 5% of the drives on which we have performed recoveries were infected with viruses," says Gary Stevens, VP of engineering for Ontrack. "Some of the customers who have brought these infected systems to us have even used commercial anti-virus software to scan for viruses, only to have the software inform them that there were no viruses present."

Using Remote Data Recovery technology, Ontrack data recovery technicians are able to determine the culprit behind suspected data losses. To begin the Remote Data Recovery process, Ontrack provides Data Advisor™, self-booting diagnostic software that determines if the user’s system is suffering from a hardware or software-related problem. Once this diagnosis is made, Data Advisor software then determines if the system is a candidate for remote services and allows the user to connect to Ontrack via modem. If a virus diagnosis is made during the Remote Data Recovery process, the engineer is able to remove and clean the virus and recover damaged data remotely, getting the user’s system up and running within hours. "Simply eradicating the virus from a computer’s hard drive is only half the problem. Often, a virus-infected file will be present in other external storage media, and the risk of re-contamination is high," cautions Stevens.

Ontrack will continue to develop its Remote Virus Cleaning capability over the next year by further automating Data Advisor’s virus detection capabilities. During second quarter 1998, Ontrack will enhance Data Advisor by adding the Vet virus scanning technology developed by Cybec Pty Ltd., a leading anti-virus software developer.
