Ontrack announces upgrade of “do-it-yourself” data recovery software

ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, announced today an upgrade to its popular line of do-it-yourself data recovery software designed for use by PC technicians and computer enthusiasts seeking same-day data recovery solutions. Formerly known as Tiramisu, EasyRecovery™ software can now handle drives larger than 8.4 Gb and includes new features such as an automatic self-booting diskette for easier use.
“EasyRecovery software supports the Ontrack strategy to extend the company's data recovery offerings into the broader data availability market,” said Mike Rogers, Ontrack CEO. “EasyRecovery fills an important need for technically savvy customers preferring a do-it-yourself solution.”
The EasyRecovery software products are designed to let users evaluate their data loss situation, see a complete list of recoverable files and recover up to five files before purchasing the software. In addition to the free evaluation version of EasyRecovery, three other versions are available to meet users' needs, including: EasyRecovery-Lite, EasyRecovery Full and EasyRecovery Bundles. “The new EasyRecovery software expands our data recovery solutions to benefit a broader spectrum of users,” said Jim Reinert, Ontrack worldwide software products manager. “For instance, customers in need of a low-end data recovery solution can take advantage of EasyRecovery-Lite and recover up to 50 files for as little as $49.”
When a suspected data loss or hard drive failure occurs, users can download EasyRecovery from the Ontrack Web site ( and automatically create the EasyRecovery diskette. The user then reboots the computer with this diskette and chooses the “recover” option to begin hard drive analysis. At that point, the user can see exactly which files are recoverable and select the files desired for recovery, which are then copied to a safe location. With the data recovery complete, the user can then make any necessary repairs to the original system.
Unlike some recovery utilities, which put data at risk by attempting to repair and rewrite the corruptions on the original drive, EasyRecovery never writes on the original drive and its evaluations are non-destructive.
“As the world leader in data recovery solutions for more than 12 years, Ontrack understands the importance of immediate, same day, ‘do-it-yourself' data recovery solutions,” Reinert said. “EasyRecovery is very useful in cases where a new, malicious virus goes undetected and causes data loss. This software product is also useful in situations like the computer will not start, accidental formatting or more complex file system corruption because the software does not have to be preinstalled on the user's system.”
The EasyRecovery product line consists of five products, each developed to conduct recovery within a different operating system. Supported platforms include: DOS/WIN FAT 16; Windows 95/98-FAT32; Windows NT; Novell NetWare; and Iomega Zip drives. Available from Ontrack worldwide offices or web site, EasyRecovery offers users a risk-free data recovery option that's accessible seven days a week, 24 hours a day, without the assistance of an engineer. Current Tiramisu customers can upgrade to EasyRecovery for half-price. Detailed pricing for EasyRecovery can be found on the World Wide Web at
