Ontrack expands electronic discovery to include regulatory and compliance servicesONTRACK Data International, Inc., (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, announced today the formation of its new Electronic Information Management (EIM) Business Unit, created to help companies recover electronic information for regulatory proceedings and compliance. Formed as an expansion of its Computer Evidence Services group, Ontrack's EIM Business Unit quickly processes and produces large amounts of information in formats that are easily reviewable by lawyers and corporations involved in large, complex proceedings.
Ontracks' Computer Evidence Services has more than five years experience recovering electronic data for litigation purposes. Recently, Ontrack has seen an increase in the number of customers successfully using the company's services for regulatory and compliance situations. ¡§As businesses increase their reliance on electronic documents, the amount of information created, stored and archived has grown exponentially,¡¨ said Mike Rogers, Ontrack CEO. ¡§For critical tasks like litigation, regulatory proceedings and compliance, the growing challenge for the corporate and legal community is the ability to uncover electronic information from a variety of different sources in a secure, cost-effective and easy-to-review manner. Ontrack created the EIM Business Unit specifically for that task.¡¨
Hardcopy printed information continues to be a critical source of evidence, but an increasing amount of the most valuable information exists only in electronic form, residing in a variety of locations on a diverse mix of hardware and storage media, including hard drives on servers, workstations, laptops and removable media such as backup tapes and CDs. Compounding the complexity are a diverse set of operating systems, including Windows (desktop, NT and 2000), Macintosh, Unix, Linux, Novell and Sun. Ontrack's EIM Business Unit uses a combination of software tools, data recovery techniques and consulting services to help lawyers and their corporate clients identify, retrieve and review this electronic information for legal proceedings.
Several legal representatives already have taken advantage of Ontrack's services, including James J. Neath, attorney at BP Amoco. ¡§We find that Ontrack's services have been extremely valuable in discovering and reporting the information necessary for our legal cases,¡¨ said Neath. ¡§It would have been difficult for us to retrieve this necessary information ourselves in the time frame required.¡¨
The Ontrack EIM process begins with an initial consultation between the client's legal team and Ontrack specialists to determine the scope of the project, develop timelines and determine the details of the specific IT environment from which the data is being taken. The original media is shipped to one of Ontrack's facilities, where it is received and tracked using chain-of-custody and control protocols to ensure that all information remains secure and protected.
Ontrack then creates an exact copy of all media to establish data integrity and authenticity. Data from the duplicate is then restored to a dedicated server environment where it is analyzed using proprietary Ontrack tools. Ontrack creates a clean database of unique files for searching, and generates hard copy files for manual review by the client's legal staff.
By outsourcing this function to Ontrack, clients receive the benefit of Ontrack's nearly 15 years of experience in recovering and restoring lost and damaged data. Clients experience minimal impact on their internal IT resources, and have no need to purchase additional hardware or software. And, the entire process is handled efficiently, securely and cost-effectively.
In recognition of Ontrack's security and control protocols, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) has twice awarded the company the James S. Cogswell Award for Outstanding Industrial Security. Ontrack is the only data recovery company to ever win this prestigious award. According to Rogers, ¡§This recognition from the DoD is validation of Ontrack's strong commitment to the security and integrity of the data we are responsible for searching and recovering for the legal community."
