Does fixed price really mean fixed price? Read the small print first.

Beware fixed price data recoveryHave you ever watched Dragons Den?  Every time the Dragons ask the same questions.  What is the unit selling price and how much does it cost to produce.  The difference is the profit.  If there is no significant profit margin then they soon say “I’m out”.

This is the same with data recovery companies.  If the costs are more than the selling price they make a loss.

The variable costs of a data recovery are high, experienced recovery engineers time is expensive, maintaining a secure and well-equipped lab and cleanroom are costly and replacement parts are too.

If replacement parts typically cost between £80-100 per set plus the engineers time this soon eats into the profit, unless!

The fixed price has restrictions

You may find that the fixed fee is limited to standard hard drives or other relatively more straightforward recoveries.  Therefore, such offers exclude more complex recoveries, but this is not communicated by the attractive headline of ‘fixed-fee recovery’.

Ask a prospective data recovery provider questions about what work is covered by the fixed fee.  Are replacement parts included in the fixed fee?  What happens if more than one set of parts are needed.  The failed disk drive often damages the replacement parts so two sets are needed; this has a cost.  What about if the recovery takes many days/ weeks, does the fixed fee still hold?  What exactly are the conditions of the fixed price offer?
