Accidental data exposure named top security risk

IT professionals are more worried about their organisations’ data being accidentally exposed by employees than compromised by cyber criminals, according to a new survey.

Enterprise mobility management provider SOTI polled both IT security experts and rank-and-file employees to produce its latest global snapshot report, published on May 19th.

It found that almost a third of IT professionals consider accidental data exposure to be the top security risk for their organisation, whereas just 16 per cent are more concerned about phishing, outside hackers and government spying.

The gravity of the threat was underlined by the employee poll, which found that almost four-fifths (78 per cent) of workers use personal devices to access corporate data, while 65 per cent sometimes forward business documents to their home email inboxes.

This highlights the importance to organisations of ensuring that employees’ use of different devices for work remains secure, as well as securely deleting sensitive data at the end of its lifecycle.
