Avast: 36% of people consider mobile backups unnecessary

A combination of lax attitudes and laziness could be putting huge amounts of consumer and business data stored on mobile devices at risk, according to a new survey.

In the run-up to World Backup Day on March 31st, antivirus vendor Avast polled 288,000 people worldwide on their attitudes towards backing up the data stored on their smartphones and tablets.

More than a third (36 per cent) of respondents considered it unnecessary to make copies of the contacts, photos and documents saved on their mobile devices, despite this having the potential to make data recovery in the case of loss or damage much more difficult.

Meanwhile, almost a quarter (24 per cent) said they were simply too lazy to back up their data properly, while 22 per cent were of the opinion that the contents of their smartphones and tablets weren’t important enough to make the effort.

This contradicted one of the survey’s other findings, with 64 per cent of individuals telling the firm they would be more worried about losing the data stored on their mobile devices than those devices themselves.

“We use our mobile devices to make important calls, capture valuable moments, browse the web, to use our favorite apps and so much more,” said Avast’s Stefanie Smith in a blog post.

“Anything can happen to your mobile device in a split second… Yet, as we discovered, many do not back up the data they consider indispensable.”

Earlier this year, a survey from Kaspersky suggested that people’s inclination to share devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops could also be jeopardising the data stored therein.

It found that 32 per cent of individuals fail to consider security before lending a device to a colleague or family member, while just one in three (33 per cent) routinely made backups of their contents.
