Big data security ‘should be all-encompassing’

Businesses keen to leverage a competitive advantage through the use of big data policies must remember to incorporate all-encompassing security measures into their systems.

With the massive rise in information that is being handled by firms at present, it is important that data archiving policies are integrated with company-wide security measures across all data silos, as analyst Gartner has stated 80 per cent of businesses are not taking this stance at present.

Earl Perkins, research vice president at Gartner, commented: “The use of different tools for each silo is complicating the implementation of any business-wide data security plans due to different functionalities, network architectures and data repositories.”

In addition, he argued the growing use of cloud services and third-party infrastructure further muddies the water when it comes to managing data security responsibilities.

As a result, companies are running the risk of non-compliance, security breaches and significant financial liabilities due to their lack of overriding security measures for big data and this is an issue that now needs to be addressed.

Do you know what data is stored on your company’s archives? Minimise risk by conducting a tape archive audit before archive tapes are recycled.
