Consumer-facing sites ‘demonstrate better security’

New research from industry analyst Quocirca has highlighted a potential need for increased data recovery measures for companies operating solely business rather than consumer-facing website.

The study revealed less than three-quarters (71 per cent) of business-facing organisations use continuous distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) protection compared with almost nine out of ten (87 per cent) of consumer-facing operators. Meanwhile, the gap for fraud detection technology was even larger at 16 and 66 per cent respectively.

Director at Quocirca Bob Tarzey stated a focus on DDoS is often included in service-level agreements for outsourced data handling services, while website security can often be an issue overlooked in many smaller firms.

“By outsourcing, the more mature consumer-facing organisations have, in effect, freed themselves of both technology and security burdens to focus on business issues,” Mr Tarzey argued.

He therefore concluded that outsourcing data management responsibilities could be beneficial for businesses keen to improve the security of their sensitive data and who lack the necessary resources to do this effectively in-house.
