The idea that data recovery and protection is essential for business wellbeing in the event of a disaster is nothing new, but companies are now increasingly looking for more than just this type of service from their backup providers.
Steve Manley, chief technology officer for the Data Protection and Availability Group at EMC, told Silicon Angle how this technology performs an important function to safeguard customer and company information, but in the modern business world improved awareness of what these backups contain is now required.
Indeed, Mr Manley cited a recent customer who wanted more than just backup services from his company – they wanted a full breakdown of what each backup file contained.
“If you don’t have some sort of catalogue that helps me understand what is inside those copies, all you’ve made is a really shiny, fancy bucket of bits,” the client told him.
Improving the management of data is therefore also an increasingly called for measure by firms.
