Gartner: Tablet lifecycles getting longer

The average lifecycle of a tablet device is growing longer than originally anticipated, according to researchers at Gartner, with gadgets often changing hands from person to person as they age.

In the firm’s latest sales forecast, it predicted that tablet shipments will grow a mere eight per cent in 2015 following an “alarming” collapse in the market last year. The devices had posted double-digit increases in 2012 and 2013.

This is in part because tablet lifecycles are extending, research director Ranjit Atwal explained. “They are shared out amongst family members and software upgrades … keep the tablets current,” he said.

Just two months ago, Gartner had described tablets as “the sweet spot” for bring-your-own-device schemes in the enterprise, citing significant cost savings compared to smartphones or business-owned gadgets.

However, the devices’ extending lifecycle will put pressure on enterprises to ensure sensitive data is permanently erased when tablets change hands, whether from employee to employee or to someone outside of the organisation.
