IoT to result in ‘data explosion next year’

An explosion in data is set to be witnessed in the coming years as a result of the growing number of devices being connected to the Internet of Things (IoT).

IT industry analyst Gartner has predicted as many as 4.9 billion individual items will be connected to IoT by the end of 2015 – a 30 per cent increase from present levels – and the information derived from these

Businesses wishing to make the most of this information will therefore require increased resources.

Indeed, vice president and Gartner fellow Steve Prentice argued: “Organisations must straddle the tension of all the information available from smart things by balancing their desire to collect and analyse it with the risk of its loss or misuse.”
