Mobile issues ‘to increase data breach risk’

Businesses across the globe are increasingly facing the risk of significant data breaches as a result of the increasing use of mobile devices to access confidential files and IT networks.

New research from IT analyst Gartner has revealed the extent to which companies are running the risk of severe data loss incidents, as a result of mobile devices being improperly configured to provide adequate protection to the firm’s network.

Principal research analyst at Gartner Dionisio Zumerle commented: “Mobile security breaches are – and will continue to be – the result of misconfiguration and misuse on an app level, rather than the outcome of deeply technical attacks on mobile devices.”

Overall, Gartner’s research showed that by 2017, 75 per cent of all mobile security breaches will come as a result of improper configuration.

“A classic example of misconfiguration is the misuse of personal cloud services through apps residing on smartphones and tablets. When used to convey enterprise data, these apps lead to data leaks that the organisation remains unaware of for the majority of devices,” Mr Zumerle noted.

Investment in effective safeguards and having in place the necessary technologies to deliver swift and efficient data recovery is therefore essential for firms that do not wish to suffer significant downtime as a result of operating mobile practices.

Furthermore, measures proposed by Gartner to ensure data security is maintained, even when a large proportion of staff are using mobile systems to access company data, include IT managers specifying certain applications and operating systems that are compatible with existing business IT infrastructure. Managers should also only give access to those users who adhere to these rules.

Device passcodes should be of a specific length and complexity to effectively safeguard against unwanted individuals gaining easy access to company files. Restricting the use of unapproved third-party apps on devices used for work purposes is also advised.

Companies should be prepared to revoke access privileges for those individuals who fail with these basic compliances.
