‘React fast’ when data recovery required

Businesses hoping to recover lost files should not dilly-dally, as the longer they leave it, the less likely they are to be able to retrieve this data.

This is the view of Alan Woodward, professor of computing at the University of Surrey, who told the Financial Times how in the event of accidental deletion or system failure, data recovery procedures should be swiftly implemented.

In many cases, when a file is accidentally deleted it remains on the hard drive of the system until it is overwritten, meaning the use of specialist technologies can restore this lost data – but only if individuals act quickly.

Some applications will automatically store recently deleted data, so it is also sensible to fully understand the workings of individual programs before embarking on more complicated recovery procedures.

Mr Woodward stated: “If you’re using a MS exchange system, for example, Outlook has a feature that allows you to retrieve recently deleted items.”
