Risks of the ‘data lake’ revealed

Companies have seen a massive increase in the amount of information they are able to collate both on customers and competitors over recent years and this has led to the birth of a new form of information repository – the data lake.

Incorporating elements of big data and effective data archiving, businesses have been able to build up considerable data volumes to date and it is a situation that will only likely increase in the years ahead.

As a result, Gartner research director Nick Heudecker believes the hype surrounding data lakes could be justified, but only if businesses utilise the best resources to bring together this disparate information prior to its analysis.

“Without at least some semblance of information governance, the lake will end up being a collection of disconnected data pools or information silos all in one place,” he argued.

As a result, companies are now being encouraged to invest in effective analytics packages to better categorise their data before archiving, as doing so can help to deliver real competitive advantages in terms of drawing on data lake information.

Do you know what data is stored on your company’s archives? Minimise risk by conducting a tape archive audit before archive tapes are recycled.
