Smartphone uptake ‘presents business data risk’

The growing proliferation of smartphones presents an increasing risk to business data security, IT industry expert Julie Pickersgill has argued.

Operations director at Advanced Digital Dynamics, Ms Pickersgill told Bdaily that companies could face a growing risk of data destruction or leaks of sensitive information as more people are using their mobile phones for work purposes.

“The biggest mistake we make is that we look upon smartphones simply as a telephone when in fact they are small computers and should be handled as such,” she stated.

Indeed, the majority of people do not realise just how much data is stored on the typical mobile device and this means that should these items fall into the wrong hands, businesses could see a significant risk to their data security.

As a result, companies should be investing in data encryption tools to safeguard mobile data, while at the same time ensuring staff are trained in the safe use of business-critical files when out of the office.
