What is your name?
What exactly do you do at Kroll Ontrack?
I’m a Clean Room Engineer, specialising in Data Recovery from every kind of storage media hardware.
How long have you been at Kroll Ontrack?
Too long to remember, definitely over six years, probably approaching ten now!
What is your most unusual/challenging/interesting recovery to date?
Last year a customer sent us a hard drive which had been submerged due to a flood.
The drive had a number of failures, including physical media damage to the platters, electronics failure and internal issues. It was somewhat of a challenge, due to the multiple failures and the damage to the media. After a lot of cleaning, repairs and patience, I managed to recover 80% of the customer’s data.
What new skills & technology are you currently learning about?
Currently, at work, I am learning about the intricacies of mobile phone electronics, and at home I am trying to master the use of the mixolydian mode on my guitar.
What are you working on at the moment?
Currently I have a number of drives with a whole variety of different problems, and I’m also working on rebuilding a few of our Clean Room imaging stations.
What type of mobile phone do you have?
A Samsung Galaxy Note 2
How do you relax after work/on weekends?
Playing guitar, bowling and watching the Big Bang Theory.
If you weren’t a data recovery engineer, what would your ideal career be & why?
I’d be a guitarist…preferably in a band. I’m not interested in worldwide fame, just making music that people enjoy.
What is your top tip for data recovery?
Don’t listen to those videos online, data recovery is not something you can perform in your garden shed.
