Data Recovery Process for Virtual Files

Data Recovery Steps

Description

Stage 1

Target LUN, iSCSI* LUN identification and low-level RAID verification at the storage block level.

Stage 2

Datastore volume file system indices are checked for meta-data-to-data stream integrity.**

Stage 3

Guest's file system and contents are verified.

Stage 4

File listing of all recoverable data is completed.

* iSCSI LUNs are reliant upon the SAN's internal file system to manage the data. Data loss within this type of logical storage may require access to the SAN's volume where the iSCSI files are stored.

** Target volumes that reside within virtual disk files are dependent upon the hypervisor's datastore file system to manage the data. Data loss at the hypervisor volume level or within the guest's virtual disk file may require additional engineering effort to complete the evaluation.

Our data recovery services

If you’ve experienced a data loss, contact us as soon as possible to get advice from our expert data recovery engineers.

Time can be critical, and the odds for successful data recovery are higher when no previous attempts have been performed. Decades of experience confirm that this is critical for saving your valuable data. Data recovery for VMware systems can be performed through our in lab, remote, and onsite services.

Remote Data Recovery
Remote

RemoteYour data is recovered remotely without your media ever leaving your premises. We connect to your system via the Internet to perform a live recovery. Only available when the system is still operational and not physically damaged.

On-site Recovery
Onsite

If your system cannot leave your premises, our engineers can bring their recovery expertise to you. This option is only available for an emergency service. For onsite data recovery, the system must be operational.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Ontrack recover data from virtual machines stored in Veeam backups?

Our engineers, with 35 years of research, experience, and development in data recovery, have the knowledge and tools to recover your data. Ontrack experts can recover data from Veeam and virtual machines backed up with it, such as from VMware and Hyper-V. All necessary steps are taken to ensure data integrity and recover the data as quickly as possible.

Can you recover data from VMware Storage Snapshot backups or virtual machines infected by malware?

Many organisations rely on virtual machines in their data centres and implement backups through Veeam software products. Ontrack fully supports the recovery of VMware, vSphere, and Microsoft Hyper-V integrated with the Veeam environment.

What is the best way to backup a Virtual Machine?

If you store critical data on your virtual machine, be sure to include it in your backup routine. You may need to specify the location of the virtual machine files in your backup software to ensure they are part of scheduled backups. Always backup your data to a secondary storage device such as an external hard drive. Backup copies of files stored on the same hard drive where the active virtual machine is located risk data loss if the hard drive fails. For safety, make multiple backups and store them on a different local server/hard drive, in the cloud or on tape. Having additional backups will help you in the event of a data loss.

Experiences that matter

Ontrack has extensive experience with all types of data loss scenarios. Our goal is to provide our customers with peace of mind in the event of data loss due to hardware failure, human error, natural disasters or cyberattacks.
