5 songs for working in IT

With 2016 almost over and the festive food coma in full swing, now is the time for reflection on the past year and try your best to accept that no matter how many times you ask users to submit a ticket they just never will (the struggle is real).

Let’s face it; if you work in IT you’ll appreciate that we’re in a period of the year where the entire office seems to be on annual leave and a spike in password reset requests are likely to follow next week. Between that and the usual barrage of calls/texts/emails over the holiday period, why not grab a beverage of choice and put your feet up for a couple of minutes - you deserve it!

To compliment your impromptu break, in this post we’ll be showcasing 5 songs that will be sure to resonate with anyone working in an IT-related role. From a song about programming to a motivational feel good classic from the 70’s, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s go!

1.   I’m So Excited – The Pointer Sisters

First up, an absolute belter by the Pointer Sisters. Picture that new hardware you ordered – it’s just been delivered and it feels like Christmas has come round all over again. Take a few moments to savor that inimitable new ‘just out of the box’ smell and rejoice; new toys!

2.   Write in C

This is one of our all-time favorites. ‘Write In C’ is a cover of the famous Beatles song ‘Let It Be’ with a lyrical twist around programming. How about this for an opening line:

“When I find my code in tons of trouble, friends and colleagues come to me, speaking words of wisdom: ‘Write in C.’”

3.   Code Monkey – Jonathan Coulton

Another staple that you should definitely be aware of. This particular version is a great AMV based on footage from ‘Black Heaven’ but the song itself will stick in your head all day. We challenge you to only listen to this song once – it’s just so catchy!

4.  Don’t Stop – Fleetwood Mac

From the classic 1977 album ‘Rumours’ - this one is perfect for those Friday afternoons where the workload just keeps on coming. Pop your headphones on and turn up this feel good anthem as loud as you can to try block out all that user error. Emphatic singing optional but highly recommended.

5.   You’re the best – Joe Esposito

When you finally get that day where everything runs smoothly; no more tickets are in the helpdesk queue, backups and servers are working as they should… things are good, because you are awesome!
