How to recover your data when your hard drive is saying it needs formatting using Ontrack EasyRecovery

14 March 2014 by Mikey Anderson

This is a very common scenario found particularly with external hard drives, though not as common as recovering from formatted drives or individual files.  Unfortunately we find that most of the time, this situation is going to point to some internal issue with the hard drive encountering some type of electronic or mechanical damage and in those cases I would suggest our in-lab data recovery services.

You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it

However, if you feel confident enough to try and recover the data from your drive using a reputable data recovery software package, here are the steps for using Ontrack® EasyRecovery™.

Firstly, make sure that you have Ontrack EasyRecovery installed on a separate drive to the one you are trying to recover data from, then connect the damaged media to the working computer with Ontrack EasyRecovery, then:

  1. Select the media type of the damaged media
  2. Select the volume where the damaged media is connected, then click continue >

Ontrack EasyRecovery step 2

  1. Then select the formatted media recovery in step 3.

If at any time you experience an error message like right at the top of this blog post referencing "bad blocks" the best course of action is to close the software, safely remove the drive and send it in to one of our labs for recovery.
