Basic mobile security ‘must be improved’

Businesses are likely to suffer regular breaches in their security until technologies are developed that help to ensure more secure use of mobile applications, a new Gartner report has revealed.

According to the analyst’s findings, having in place effective data recovery measures could be increasingly important for firms over the coming years, as more than 75 per cent of all mobile applications are expected to fail even basic security tests through to the end of 2015 at the earliest.

Dionisio Zumerle, principal research analyst at Gartner, argued that the massive uptake of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies by businesses across the globe means there are now myriad new avenues for networks to be breached by malware downloaded and installed on devices that have access to company networks.

“Most enterprises are inexperienced in mobile application security. Even when application security testing is undertaken, it is often done casually by developers who are mostly concerned with the functionality of applications, not their security,” he commented.

Existing static and dynamic application security testing vendors could be of use in these circumstances, but in many cases, companies see the use of these services as an unnecessary expense, when in reality, this is far from the truth of the matter.

Mr Zumerle added that, today, more than 90 per cent of businesses utilise third-party applications on devices that are allowed access to their networks, but in many cases these systems are not security checked.

He offered a final word of warning to companies operating extensive BYOD operations that applications downloaded to mobile devices have “little to no” security testing and therefore businesses are leaving themselves open to considerable risk by not specifying what applications are permissible for business mobile users.

“They should download and use only those applications that have successfully passed security tests conducted by specialised application security testing vendors,” Mr Zumerle concluded.
