IT spending pace ‘to increase in 2014’

New figures published by Gartner as part of the organisation’s latest IT Spending Outlook have highlighted a significant increase in investment in a range of business-critical areas this year.

Overall data archiving and IT management budgets are forecast to increase by 2.1 per cent in comparison to 2013, growing to $3.7 trillion (£2.15 trillion) across the globe.

Data centre investment will continue to make up a considerable proportion of spending for firms over the coming months, while enterprise software and devices are also areas that will witness considerable growth.

Richard Gordon, managing vice-president at Gartner, commented: “IT is entering its third phase of development, moving from a focus on technology and processes in the past to a focus in the future on new business models enabled by digitalisation.”

He added price pressures witnessed in 2013, coupled with a lack of product differentiation, caused a dampening effect on investment levels in recent months, but businesses are now increasing their short-term spending outlook.
