Survey shows UK companies slow to respond to security alerts

Fewer than a third of UK companies are confident they could remedy major security issues in their computer systems within an hour of discovery.

This is according to a new survey, conducted by Vanson Bourne on behalf of Tenable Network Security, in which 200 UK and 200 German organisations were polled on their ability to respond to security alerts like the ShellShock and Heartbleed vulnerabilities.

Just 29 per cent of British businesses said they would have the problem patched within an hour, compared to 48 per cent of those in Germany.

Moreover, it took them an average of 40 hours to detect new software installed on their systems, while the figure was only 17 hours on the mainland.

Gavin Millard, technical director of Tenable Network Security, described this as “a long time to have a chink in your defences”.

“This is significant because with bugs and malware, time really is of the essence … the bad guys are working just as quickly to exploit them as the good guys are working to fix them,” he explained.

As such, the longer it takes organisations to respond to security alerts, the more likely they are to experience data loss or theft.
