Time lapse for data breach detection

New research from IT security and compliance management solutions provider Tripwire has highlighted a considerable proportion of businesses that may be taking too long to identify breaches within their systems.

According to figures compiled by the firm, businesses may be increasing their likelihood of requiring considerable data recovery actions, as a result of a failure to implement adequate security controls and measures to highlight when a breach occurs.

The survey of 102 UK financial institutions and 151 retail organisations showed how 35 per cent of respondents stated it would take between two and three days for a breach to show up on their systems.

Meanwhile, 85 per cent of point-of-sale intrusions were shown to take multiple weeks to uncover, while 43 per cent of web application attacks were not revealed for several months.

Overall, 24 per cent of respondents stated they have at some point suffered a data breach in which personally identifiable information was stolen, while 51 per cent stated they are only “somewhat confident” that their existing security controls would detect the use of malicious applications.

That said, 60 per cent of survey participants believed their systems are adequate to safeguard against the theft of confidential data.

Tim Erlin, director of IT security and risk strategy for Tripwire, stated: “It is shocking to see the high level of confidence exhibited by respondents in the wake of the recent series of high-profile cardholder data breaches.”

Dwayne Melancon, chief technology officer at Tripwire, concluded more now needs to be done to initiate a dialogue on the importance of effective data security protocols for firms entrusted with sensitive consumer information.

“These attitudes seem to indicate a high degree of overconfidence or naivety among information security practitioners. I believe a number of these organisations may be in for a rude awakening if their systems are targeted by criminals,” he noted.
