New Ontrack tool eliminates costly downtime during electronic discovery process

ONTRACK Data International, Inc., (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, today introduced a new product that allows organizations engaged in electronic legal discovery to capture electronic evidence without costly hardware downtime. CaptureIt™ lets users retrieve data and send it to Ontrack's Electronic Information Management (EIM) Business Unit for processing without removing the device from operation — saving substantial time, money and productivity in the process, while helping organizations meet tight, court-imposed discovery deadlines.

“Typically, our clients need to extract data from computer storage devices containing information critical to legal matters. They don't want to take a device out of service unless they absolutely have to. They only want to send us the data,” said Mike Rogers, Ontrack CEO. “With CaptureIt, a client can quickly and cost-effectively capture that data, ensure its authenticity and ship it to Ontrack for processing.”

In most cases, companies or other organizations engaged in electronic discovery must remove storage devices from their computer systems and ship them to Ontrack's EIM Business Unit for data extraction. With a critical device out of service — perhaps for the duration of an investigative period — a company could suffer losses in productivity. In addition, the data stored on the device is not considered “secured” until the device physically arrives at Ontrack for processing.

CaptureIt allows companies to retrieve and secure data from multiple devices right on site. First, CaptureIt copies the data from the device to a network location. It is then coded with data “signatures” used by EIM engineers to ensure that the data is not tampered with or contaminated after being copied. Finally, the data is transferred to a removable medium, such as a CD or tape, and sent to EIM for processing and analysis. CaptureIt allows a company to make a precise, “secured” image of the device data, right on location, prior to sending it to EIM.

“We are often involved, on behalf of our clients, in employee-related investigations and disputes in connection with computer tampering, misappropriation of trade secrets or unfair competition claims that can side-line critical computer systems and threaten productivity during discovery. Finding an effective way to minimize the business disruptions to our clients is very important,” says Mark S. Deiermann of the law firm Bryan Cave LLP. “As part of the EIM service, Ontrack's CaptureIt tool now allows us to move quickly, conduct electronic discovery transparently, minimize a client's systems downtime in the process and save them time and money.”

Once the data arrives at Ontrack's EIM Business Unit, it is restored to a dedicated server environment where it is analyzed using proprietary Ontrack tools. EIM creates a clean database of unique files for searching, and generates hard copy files for manual review by the client's legal staff. By outsourcing this function to EIM, clients benefit from Ontrack's 15 years of experience in recovering and restoring lost and damaged data, minimize the impact on their internal IT resources and eliminate the need to purchase additional hardware or software.

CaptureIt is the first product issued by Ontrack's new EIM Business Unit, which was formed to help companies recover electronic information for litigation. Formed as an expansion of its Computer Evidence Services group, EIM uses a combination of software tools, such as CaptureIt, data recovery techniques and consulting services to help lawyers and their corporate clients identify, retrieve and review this electronic information for legal proceedings.

CaptureIt is immediately available for $49.99 . It can be purchased on the Ontrack Web site
