‘Half of businesses’ suffer data losses

Having in place effective data recovery policies and systems in place should be a priority for all businesses, after new research has shown the extent to which firms are suffering data loss incidents at present.

A new report from IDG Connect and Cibecs has highlighted the significant proportion of businesses that have suffered data loss incidents over the last year, with 50 per cent of companies having suffered data loss during the last 12 months.

One of the largest developments within businesses across the globe over recent years has been the shift towards more out-of-office working, with mobile working seen as a cost-efficient and productive method to increase flexibility.

This has come at a price, however, as many companies have failed to update their data security practices in line with the growing number of mobile devices being given access to IT networks.

Endpoint-focused data protection should now be something all companies with this setup should look to invest in, as difficulties can arise when individuals utilise devices not specifically designed to be connected to a firm’s IT infrastructure.

Protecting data is only half of the story though, as when firms lose essential files it is imperative they act swiftly to restore them. Data recovery investment should therefore also form part of business disaster recovery budgets, with regularly-updated plans in place to restore lost data in the event of a mishap.

Meanwhile, partner at commercial law firm McClure Naismith Scott Kerr recently stated in an interview for the Scotsman that the costs associated with a failure to properly safeguard data should not be underestimated.

He highlighted the case of a leading UK supermarket chain, which was subject to a data breach that led to the personal details of more than 10,000 customers being placed online.

With fines available to the Information Commissioner’s Office of up to £500,000 for a serious breach of data protection laws, companies need to pay close attention to their data security and recovery protocols at all times.
